= Constraints for the activation of the joint PhD =
* The minimum time to be spent at destination strictly depends on the other institution, and is discussed during the negotiation
** There is quite a lot of heterogeneity, e.g., from 6 months for Portugal to 24 months for KTH, so this is a very important point
* The joint PhD must be activated as soon as possible, as the negotiation may be very long - in general as soon as the PhD is started and within the first 12 months of the PhD

= How to proceed =
* The following document must be filled in an signed by the two supervisors plus the coordinator of the PhD program
** The document formalizes the motivation for the activation of the joint Phd, plus the administrative contacts at destination
* The whole process takes usually 3-5 months

= How the joint PhD works for the PhD student =
* The PhD student must follow the rules of both institutions
* For Politecnico, this implies that the student must follow the usual guidelines for course, publications, admission to next year and final exam
* Additional requirements may be imposed by the host istitution
* The PhD defense will be carried out most likely in Torino, but this point may be under discussion during the negotiation phase
