An incoming joint PhD is a PhD student affiliated with another University that wishes to pursue in parallel also the PhD at Politecnico di Torino, e.g., to formalize an ongoing collaboration.

Constraints for the activation of the joint PhD
* The PhD student must spend a minimum of 18 months at Politecnico di Torino
* The joint PhD must be activated within the first 12 months of their PhD, or must have still 3 years of doctoral program after the beginning of the joint PhD
* The PhD student must have as preliminary degree a Master of Science
** Some international institutions allow to begin a PhD right after a Bachelor degree - this is not the case for Politecnico di Torino

= How to proceed =
* The following document must be filled in and signed by the two supervisors plus the coordinator of the PhD program
**The document formalizes the motivation for the activation of the joint Phd, plus the administrative contacts at destination
* The whole process takes usually 3-5 months. The process may be quicker if joint PhDs have been signed in the past with the same university.

= How the joint PhD works for the PhD student =
* Once that the Joint PhD agreement is signed, the student is formally enrolled at Politecnico di Torino with a regular student matricola number
* The PhD student must follow the rules of both institutions. In case of conflicts, the prevailing rules are the ones from the home University.
* For Politecnico, this implies that the student must:
** Meet the minimum requirements on publications
** Meet the requirements on Hard and Soft Skill courses
** Courses taken at their home institution may be recognized, but require formal discussion during a Collegio
** Pass the yearly evaluation as all Politecnico PhD students
** Be formally admitted to the final discussion, as all Politecnico PhD students
* The PhD defense will be carried out most likely at the home institution, as agreed during the negotiation phase. The evaluation board usually includes members of both Institutions.
